What are we becoming?

I was driving to a new temporary home this week and this thought popped into my mind.

What are we becoming?

.

That could be a direct and specific question for each of us personally and, it could be a philosophical question for humanity on a whole.

It might be a question that creates confusion or chaos in our mind or, a question that stops us in our tracks and enables us to see something differently.

.

– What are we becoming?

– And, what has had the greatest influence on that?

.

The Role of Marketing, Media & Messaging

I mentioned last week a presentation I prepared for a group and this FIRST more public discussion of ‘conscious consumers’, which included this slide…

As usual, I can only say this because I’ve lived it.

.

I can also say it took a very long time to SEE those who had established significant influence over my mind, and to SHIFT the impact they’ve had.

.

“The Marketing, the Media and the Messages have created more stress and more disconnection and have done more collective damage to our MINDS, than anything else we will encounter in our lives.”

Harsh?

Yes.

And, feel free to tune out if you are not ready to hear that.

What have we become?

In podcast # 44, I mention that I’m not at all interested in reinforcing the programming that has taken place over the past 50-70 years by the Media.

— We have been programmed to expect weekly episodes.

— We have been programmed to expect a whole lot for ‘free’ and only now are finding it out it wasn’t free at all (which, of course some of us already knew…“there’s no such thing as a free lunch”).

— We have been programmed to buy when our emotional insecurities are triggered.

— We have been programmed to feel insecure when we are shown some unrealistic ‘ideal’.

— We have been programmed to literally kill ourselves trying to measure up to an ideal that no one has, or can ever attain (and still be a picture of genuine health – physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually).

What we have become has been, in part, a by-product of programming.

…by the Marketing industry.

…by the Media conglomerates.

…by the Messages encoded to manipulate our minds.

Harsh?

Yes.

True?

.

As I have stepped back from the Marketing industry and turned off the vast majority of the Messages, I was able to SEE that, what we have become, has largely (though not exclusively) been programmed into us by the Marketing, the Media and the Messengers.

Yes.

Untrue?

Nature | Nurture

Last month I leaned into the concept of Yin and Yang…it was one of thousands of concepts, ideas and paradigms that enabled me to recalibrate the relationship with my health, with money, my career/business, with other humans and with Spirit — and the influence the Three Ms have had and take control of my mind.

Other key pieces of the puzzle?

— Degree studies in Psychology.

— Extended studies in World Religions & Sociology.

— Training as a Yoga Instructor & Yoga Therapy (philosophy and practice).

— A healthy obsession with Spiritual Law and Quantum Physics.

In Psychology, there are hundreds of concepts that frame how humans develop – from birth to death. One particular concept applies to this discussion – nature vs. nurture.

Just like the Yin and Yang, this concept suggests there are two sides to WHAT influences WHO we become.

.

Nature •••

According to Psychology’s science, this includes things buried in our DNA that inform aspects of our personality.

According to multiple, varied spiritual traditions, it is more expansive! From where the planets were when you were born (Vedic and Western Astrology) to the possibility of multiple lifetimes (Hinduism, Buddhism…) and repeating patterns of energy (Mayan, Hermetic Tradition).

Nurture •••

In Psychology, we discuss the impact of home environment, gender, country of origin, socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, single vs. dual parents, and more.

In spiritual traditions, we regularly return to what we allow to influence our minds, through both individual and collective practices – expanding our thinking, writing out our gratitudes each night, prayer, meditation, learning how to leverage our intuitive capabilities in conjunction with our intellectual prowess.

There is no simple ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.

There are fast/easy ways to become a more coherent, conscious consumers (deep dive down a million rabbit holes, turn off all the mainstream and stop buying anything); and, there are the more realistic ways that most of us will choose (one degree at a time, one decision at a time)

And, ultimately, a combination of both.

But here’s what I do know with concrete certainty.

Who we are has been heavily influenced by the Marketing, the Media and the Message/Messengers.

And, that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

(I mean, right now, it mostly is because of the nefarious ones, but it doesn’t HAVE to be!)

What it really means is that the Marketing, the Media and the Message are POWERFUL conduits; and, they can influence or ‘nurture’ the greater good for all beings, or something else.

.

And, I feel the tides shifting.

I feel more pulled than ever before to add my Contribution to creating more coherent, conscious consumers (and that’s leading up to a shift here in this space over the next month).

I feel more strongly ever that, five short years from now, both their power and what they ‘nurture’ will have shifted, in part because of what we and others are doing on platforms like this one.

I believe that 20-50 years from now we will begin to look back on the latter part of the 20th century and the early part of the 21st century and ask, ‘what were we becoming?’

.

(Hint: what we were becoming was/is directly connected to what we were/are thinking)

I also hold space for humanity on a whole to evolve and shift at the pace Source, Spirit, God, Divine intends, so that we will say in the near future, ‘...look at what we are becoming!’

– Coherent.

– Conscious.

– Creators.

What we have become is a reflection of what we have deemed to be sufficient…

What we deem to be sufficient is a reflection of what we ‘think’ is rational…

And we cannot entertain the ‘irrationally rational’ until we are ready for it.

My Turning Points

– I turned off cable TV in 2009.

– I started to tune out of the Marketing industry in 2012.

– I began to sync up with hundreds of divergent perspectives in 2013.

And, nothing has been the same since.

That’s what we do here. We share experiences and insights that have enabled us to ‘become’ — more aware, conscious and coherent, as consumers and humans.
