Idea Fairies
I think I’ve mentioned before, if you haven’t read “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert … it’s a must. Especially if you can resonate with what I shared last week…
…the very beginning of my journey and what prompted me to even begin tapping into the powerful and somewhat unruly creative process, to redefine my career and recalibrate a million other things in order to trade a life of work for a Life 360º.
"The Universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them." Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic
.
Idea Fairies
My current idea fairy first showed up at 3:21 am on November 21, 2017 and, once she discovered that I was willing co-creator, she never really left.
She also sent a whole bunch of her friends who have helped me manifest more, open to more, relate to more and experience more…but, there were also some definite pain points and problems like,
— their desire to want to visit at 3:00 am.
— their apparent distaste for 'process'
— their almost reckless disregard, or perhaps lack of concern, for corralling the incoming flood of creative ideation (ideas aren’t overly discriminating at first, they choose who they choose, according to Liz, and they will often play with multiple co-creators when the idea is something that must come to life for the betterment of humanity) and
— also, they were not very helpful in critically evaluating the ideas that were best-suited to me, others or when to allow the idea to find another co-creator.
•
Nonetheless, Big Magic was a turning point for me, because when I read it at the end of 2019, I was feeling a lot of the same things I had felt in 2012… constricted and buried under the weight of millions of fears, which left me feeling uninspired and caught up in the rip current of disillusion or discontent that, I still hadn’t found what I was looking for; what my ‘soul’ had come here to create.
•
At one point Liz says,
“the idea will wake you up in the middle of the night and distract you from your everyday routine. The idea will not leave you alone until it has your fullest attention. And then, in a quiet moment, it will ask, ‘do you want to work with me.’ At this point you have two options for how to respond.”
•
You can say yes.
And you can say no.
__
Dear Past Self,
You will say ‘yes’ a thousand times, and it might be beneficial to learn sooner than later that, “No” — delivered with kindness, grace and appreciation — is a complete sentence.
Nothing bad happens if you say no to an idea that looks good on paper, but isn’t aligned with your Soul Path.
__
I had embarked on almost 10-years of ‘Eating Praying Loving’ (70% of which had been an absolute BLAST) yet, in 2018/19 started to feel like I still hadn’t found it yet.
I think two things happened,
1 - I got serious in 2016 and
2 - I experienced a different kind of burn out…a creative one.
I think those two things are related.
When I started to get serious about what I wanted to do when I grew up, things immediately shifted and I didn’t notice the gradual loss of creative power.
.
It just began to seep out, little by little, and one person described it as simply having too many irons in the fire.
.
One of my spiritual mentors clarified, ‘you’re losing energy because you need to find a sense of equilibrium again, you’ve expended a great deal of energy creating ‘out there’; for your clients, with others and now, it’s time to draw inward’.
(Sounds like the Yin and Yang doesn’t it?)
The Yin/Yang & The Rebalancing
The Creative Process is ideation and active generation of things, we see progress above the surface and feel like things are igniting.
AND
It is the quiet more earthy things, where we go below the surface to funnel energy into our roots and for real, long-term growth.
I framed it this way for my Marketing community this month,
As much as you have moments where you want to amplify and start things, you also need to be clear when it's time to pause and stop things!
And, as usual, I can only say this because I’ve lived this…and so have many of you. Trying to add more to an already overburdened to-do list, possibly spending more on another course, coach or creativity experience and my personal favourite, layering in more — complicating things.
.
There Is a Process
And it can be messy at times; there is no real beginning or ending and it can get downright chaotic and confusing.
Your process won’t be the same and mine and mine isn’t the same as Liz’s…BUT, I think we all share a few things in common, such as,
when the things you are creating start to feel out of alignment, or like you are losing energy, or like we have too many irons in the fire, it’s a reflection of something else…
…like we are losing sight of our Creator Soul’s unique Contribution.
Our Contribution - what we came here for, in my experience the intersection between:
— What we’ve done (in this life or past)
— How we do it differently than others, our natural style or way
— Who we are, at a soul level.
.
The Creative Process is messy and as much as we might hear things like,
“Seek with all your heart and you will find” (2 Chronicles 15:2) as with the vast majority of jewels, “the cave you fear to enter, is where your treasure resides.” (Joseph Campbell, The Hero’s Journey)
In my experience it has been about the seeking and the finding, it’s been about the caves and treasures and the jewels and…
…it has been about allowing it to unfold.
That’s what we do here. We let it unfold…with as much kindness, grace and patience as we can muster in this very imperfect, chaotic, confusing and overwhelming world.
